BirdLife Australia and Birds New Zealand Student travel grants
There are a number of grants available to students wishing to attend the AOC 2025.
The Stuart Leslie Travel Grant
Awarded by BirdLife Australia to individuals attending conferences with a significant focus on avian research or bird-related topics. Grants for up to $1000 are available.

Birds New Zealand Travel Grant
Birds NZ offers travel grants to assist postgraduate research students from New Zealand to present their findings at the AOC 2025.
Closing date: 20 June 2025
Depending on the location of the conference, the grant may cover the cost of travel or registration fees. Visit https://birdsnz.org.nz for more information on these grants.
BirdLife Western Australia Postgraduate Student Sponsorship
The BirdLife Western Australia branch is pleased to be offering postgraduate student sponsorship to assist attendance at the AOC 2025. Two grants of $500 are being offered this year. These will be allocated on the basis of the merit, quality and relevance of submitted abstracts.

Applications must include:
- A brief CV, including details of current course of study (institution, degree, thesis title and project overview)
- A copy of your submitted AOC 2025 abstract
- A letter of support from a course supervisor (can be emailed directly to BirdLife WA)
The conditions of this sponsorship are that applicants:
- Are enrolled for a postgraduate degree that is relevant to ornithology
- Are studying in Western Australia
- Have registered to attend the AOC 2025 for at least one day
- Are prepared to present a paper at this conference
- Have not received any other subsidy or grant to attend the AOC 2025.
Gavin Jackson Memorial Prize
This biennial prize is being awarded in honour of Gavin Jackson.
The AOC 2025 prize is awarded to a student presenter demonstrating a passion for birds and ornithological research. The prize will include reimbursement of the conference registration fee to attend the Australasian Ornithological Conference, and a two-year membership to BirdLife Australia.

- What you aim to do in the future following your studies.

About Gavin Jackson
Gavin Jackson was a passionate ornithologist, remembered for his sense of humour and strength of character. Sadly during 2011 while on an extended overseas trip with his wife, Deb, Gavin was diagnosed with cancer and after a six-month battle passed away in February 2012.
